While the Emporer was deep in thought, locked away in his throne room, the old Pope passed away. Still Avitas remained locked in his dark chamber, despite the fact that the old man had been a dear friend. Only when the smoke above St Paul's Cathedral turned white did he emerge from his place of thought. There he met with the new Pope, Pius, and he shook his hand. The Pope preached his first mass, and the crowds gathered in St Peter's Square to hear the first words of their new and brilliant leader. Messengers were sent out to ask the Christian leaders to come and meet with the new Pope. After the Mass Avitas stepped up to Pius and spoke. "Your sheep cheer for you, will you not say afew words to hearten them against the pagans that threaten our lands?"

"People of Western Rome, and the christian lands! The heathens try to blot out our country and our faith, but the Lord shall protect us. Remain faithful, and strike out against the unbelievers wherever you find them!" The crowd stood in the square let out a cheer, so loud, that it seemed to shake the very earth beneath them. The Pope stepped down from the podium, and walked slowly back to his chambers, accompanied by the loud cheers of his people. He smiled, as he was glad to be accepted by them.

Then a great feast was prepared, and wine was brought by the barrel from Southern Italia. Pork was brought, the finest the farmers of Florence could offer. Fish also was brought, from Venice, and many fine fruits were gathered, and many more things of beautiful taste were brought, and there was enough to feed the thousands of Christians that were on a pilgrimage to Rome to see the new Pope, and more besides. And merchants brought silk, and the great wooden feast tables were laid over with red and gold. But the finest was the Pope's table, where would sit him and the Christian lords, and the great Bishops of the Christian world. It's tablecloth was crimson red and shimmering gold, with fine embroidery of silver, depicting the crucifix, and the eagle, and many other things all intertwined. Upon it was written in the centre in latin: Is est God's traba , quod totus super is est Suus, which was This is God's table, and all upon it is His.
All was made ready, only the Lords of Christianity were awaited, and then the feast would begin.

The Flemish Duke was first to arrive, as he had not been invited to the Vandal Feast. His entourage of bodyguards sorrounded him, he wore lavish and expensive clothes. He bore a gold cross in tribute to the new Pope.

Entering into the halls, escorted by his bodyguards, King Roland I of the Franks bowed deeply to the new Pope. "Hail Great Father of our Faith - allow me to congratulate you on your election. May you lead your flock to a brighter tomorrow in the grace of God." He knew the last pope had no love for him, but Roland knew a good first impression was necessary for this one, lest he lose further favour with his religious fellows.
Taking his seat, he then bowed his head to Caesar. "Hail Caesar, the Franks salute you. We must compliment you on your hospitality here - and this city truly is a glorious jewel of the world. You have prepared quite the feast - a truly noble lord of men."

The Pope looked around at his lavish surroundings, and the caesar talking to the Frankish lord. He chuckled at seeing Roland try to make good first impressions. It was funny, but Roland was a good man, and would be needed for the support of Rome in these dark hours.

"Welcome Roland, honourable ally." Said Avitas, returning the inclination of the head to Roland. Turning to Pius, the Caeser asked: "Lord, I would beg of you that once all our Christian friends have arrived you would preach a Mass for us."

"It would be most fitting, yes," Roland agreed with the Caesar. "Wise as ever, good Caesar - I have come too bearing gifts, my friend." Gesturing, the doors opened and several soldiers hauled in gold chests, leaving them by the side of the hall out of the way, but as close still to Caesar as possible. "I bring geld in tribute to Rome from the Franks, in honour of our shared faith and friendship."

"I thank you most highly, and await the day I can return this grace." Replied Caeser with a bow of thanks.

"You honour me too much," Roland replied, smiling. "It is but a small token, for the enemy assails us from all sides - seeking to bring ruin to our lands out of spite. Saxon spies have been found lurking in my northern lands, and I fear I may have to act accordingly. However, I have a humble favour to ask our Holy Father - and some good news in this dark time."
Pausing, he looked to those gathered - Roman, Flemish, Pope, and Frank - before he spoke. "I have, after recovering from the loss of my last dearly departed wife, found a woman to wed. I have proposed to the Queen Ilsabella Varousa - and she has accepted. I ask the Pope to be the one who weds us, and thus unites out two nations into one."

Ilsabella entered the halls listening to Roland talk about uniting two nations into one. She smiled, "Yes, two nations combining." She stopped just behind Roland and rested a hand on his shoulder.
"Thank you Caesar for such a kind invitation." She said quietly.

The Pope was interrupted from deep thought by Roland. "Oh yes, after the feast and mass, I shall wed you here if you wish?" he said, with a smile.

"Yes, I would be honoured to hold your wedding here if it is what you wish. Such a blessed union between my allies can only mean good!" Avitas declared both loudly and jovially.

Standing, Roland wrapped an arm around his fiancee's shoulders, taking her other hand and kissing it gently in greeting to her, smiling at her a moment before looking back to Caesar and the Pope. HE offered them both a smile. "The christian lords have gathered here, and the people are in jubilation across the Christian world at the Pope's ascencion - his first act of marrying two of his most devout servants would be a great and momentous occasion. I would be honoured if he would."

Pius smiled. "I would be honoured to wed you in matrimony. Indeed I shall."
