After leaving the wedding with a feeling of happiness, Avitas arrived back at his palace to a messenger bearing the news of Rhegium's fall.
He immediatly summoned his generals.
As they were lined up in front of him in his Imperial Office, he began his speak.
"So....you've failed again...."
Some of the Generals shifted their feet a little.
"Then it is OVER!!!" He screamed, kicking out at a plant-pot nearby, sending it flying against a wall, shattering it and spilling earth and leaves around the floor.
"We cannot win without aid.
The French have their own troubles...so they say.
The Visigoths would rather dance at balls than draw a sword.
And the Huns fail to see our repentance."
Turning his attention back to the genrals, he said coldly.
"This failure must be punished."
The men seemed to become slightly afraid.
"Bolurus." Avitas indicated the general who had been in charge of the defence.
The man stepped forward.
"You...shall be punished for your actions.
The Vandals...no longer take kindly to Roman visits. You shall be the next messenger. Go and tell them our messege!"
The man worriedly backed off from the Emporer and then turned and ran out of the room.
A consulate entered and said:
"Lord, your people want to hear you, they have heard of the fall from refugees."
Avitas went onto his balcony and spoke to the waiting masses:
"FRIENDS! ROMANS! COUNTRYMEN!!
The Vandals have attacked, it is true. They have won. But they have lost their leader, who burns in hell for his pagan beliefs and for his violent actions. Rome will strike them down, and all of them will die! Be strong, Romans, and live in hatred of the Hated, as I name them forever!"
Avitas returned inside.
One of generals said:
"A great speech, Lord."
"Yes," Avitas replied.
"But all lies."
