The governor of the Norwegian city of York was sent a letter from the saxon king Hengest II. Opened, it read the following:
To the Governor of York,
Tell your master, the King of Norway, that if he does not surrender the cities of: York, Mannau and Dublin to saxon control, war shall break out and they shall be taken by force. The fact that vikings intrude upon rightful saxon ground is an insult, and they should surrender them immediately do they wish not to cause any further upsets,
King Hengest II of England
