A letter arrived for the Ostrogoth King from the court of the Frankish King:
"In the interests of peace and better relations between Francland and the Ostrogoth Kingdom, we request you hand over the city of Genoa to our rule as it was once part of our King's ancestral lands. Should this be done, then the Franks shall consider you a friend and will consider it the first step towards stronger ties between our lands. We do hope you accept our request."

In reply to your offer I have decided that if I give you Genoa as a sign of peace my Kingdom will grow smaller and less protected. Therefore my kingdom and I will wither and die like an unnourished flower surrounded the frosty cloak of winter. If you promise to form an alliance with my court, Genoa will be yours when my influence in these lands grow.

If you return Genoa to us, then we shall have an alliance. However, in these coming times where a war of faith is coming I must ask where your faith lies - in Christianity or in Paganism?

Your lack of reply indicates that you are unwilling to open negotiations of any kind with our kingdom. So be it.

Another rider soon arrived, with a message for the Ostrogoth King. "We have learned you have handed over Vienna ot Norway simply because you offended his messenger by refusing to speak at a time. You committed a similar crime to us, your more immediate neighbours who shelter you from many powers - and of that fact you are blissfully unaware. You have shown a weakness and submissive nature unbecoming of a king - we requested some of our home back and you refuse, yet the Norweigians are offended by you and you grant them a large portion of your lands. This will be remembered in our halls for future dealings."
