Word reached Budapest of Qaragan’s victory in battle against the Slavs of Illyria causing a small celebration to begin in the streets. Tales of Qaragan’s fierceness in battle and of how his sword was said to have cleaved the enemy army in 2 rang through the streets mixed with tales of how in the end he spared the remaining peoples and showed them mercy in return for peaceful servitude. These stories passed from mouth to ear to mouth and though they knew that the conquest of Illyria was far from over the Hun nation took heart in that a new leader was born unto them.
In a dark corner of the Council building Hasat stood looking out at the celebration in the streets having already heard of his cousins exploits…. Far to often for his tastes. He grimaced seeing the people rejoicing even at such a small victory and even more in the name of his cousin.
“Why have you called us here Hasat?” Tai asked as he and Turan entered the chamber and closed the door behind them silently. They were obviously curios and mistrusting of there cousin in almost all maters, Hasat was known for his treachery and un-honorable ways but his message seemed urgent so against better judgment they came and now waited for answers.
“Look out there cousins, the masses teem with tales of our brothers victory. People speak of him as if he were Attila Re-Born. His fame and power among all our tribes spread now like a sickness growing stronger with each victory… What say you to this cousins?” asked Hasat in a spiteful tone as he continued to stare at the crowds below.
Both Tai and Turan looked between themselves then back to Hasat curiously as they slowly came to the same window to look out upon the celebration. Each had there concerns of Qaragan’s popularity and rising power but none would speak these till now and it was a wonder to the twin council members and brothers of Qaragan to now hear these words coming from Hasat’s mouth but all quickly turned there attentions to what was transpiring below.
The people celebrated, children played freely in the streets and small processions moved through the city while people watched and cheered in honor of Qaragan ,who though still away, filled there Hun hearts with the ancient fire of the past.
Trumpets suddenly sounded through the streets as Nemuri stepped out onto the steps of the Council building to address the people.
His aged eyes watched as the masses grew silent and gathered around to listen to the Eldest and wisest of there tribal leaders. He smiled and coughed hoarsely for a moment before raising his arms and his eyes to the sky.
“May they the Eyes of the Ancestors and Gods continue to look favorably down upon the Hun Empire!” He cried out and looked back to the people. “The tales are True!, Qaragan… My nephew and one of your great Tribal leaders has been victorious in taking back Segestica and its surrounding lands. Honor and glory be heaped upon his name!”
The people erupted in cheers which gave Nemuri a chance to again cough then as he looked up he weakly smiled to the masses around. “Huns, Celebrate and rejoice as we again will show the world we are a power! This victory is the first of many…..many…..”
All around gasped as Nemuri paused abruptly in the middle of his speech and taking a few gasping breaths fell unconscious there on the steps on the Council building. Guards rushed out quickly some to his aid and lifted him above there heads to carry him away while others stood before the crowds and held them in check while there leader was tended to.
Above in the shadowy room Tai and Turan gasped at what they had just seen and rushed towards the doors in haste to leave only to stop and turn as they viewed there cousin still standing at the window but now laughing darkly.
“What is this Hasat!” groweld Turan moving towards him with fists clenched. “Is this Your Doing snake?”
“Indeed it is dear cousin.” said Hasat as he turned to them with an evil looked smirk. He looked on his cousins and though fear filled him as he saw there reactions to his admission he did his best to keep a calm and collected look before continuing. “Before you kill me as I know it is what you are contemplating this very moment first answer the question I posed to you… call it a last request if you will, surely as your cousin and fellow tribal leader I deserve that much.”
Confused the two brothers looked between themselves then back to him. “Very well, yes we are concerned with our brothers growing power over our people, We see the people turning to him as there sole leader and away from us but what of it Hasat?, It is beyond our control at this time for it is he not we who went to war and for this decision we are looked on as cowards.” replied Turan in a hateful tone though personally he could not tell who it was for, Hasat or Qaragan.
Tai then stepped forward and asked bluntly “Why have you done this Hasat, if your grievance is with our brother then why attack our uncle?”
“From birth our uncle Nemuri has favored Qaragan, he has always showered affection, attention, wisdom, teachings and everything else on him while we have only sampled these at rare and short periods. He backs Qaragan completely and is your brothers biggest supporter in almost all things. Without Uncle we can strike at him at our leisure and when word reaches him he will rush back here to be at Nemuri’s side.” replied Hasat in a devious tone. “We three can control the Hun Empire between us… I have been slipping him small doses of an untraceable poison for some time now so Nemuri will live until Qaragan dies and then we shall send the old man to join him…. “
Tai and Turan said nothing, shocked as they were they saw logic in there cousins words and only after silently nodding did they leave the chamber and Hasat intact. They would do this for in there minds now was planted the seed of hatred for both there brother and uncle but they would say nothing further on the matter between themselves…. They would go to there uncle, fain concern and care while allowing the plot to continue.
Hasat, now alone, smiled to himself for his plan had worked and the weak willed brothers of Qaragan had fallen for the bate. All he had said to them was true but he left out the part of his plan that when Qaragan and Nemuri were gone and he had used his remaining cousins to stabilize the nation and expand it he would then eliminate them and become King of the Huns himself. Elated at this thought he laughed and went back to the window to watch the now frantic crowds in the street as the guards did there best to calm things down.
“Word will be sent… He will Return….. Then….. Qaragan Will Die…..”
