Coming down to the dock, Avitas ordered that tar be brought from his ship. Then he told his sailors to draw a map of Europe on the stone landing area, and over Britainnia he wrote with his own hand: Is terra est Romanorum eternus Then he directed the mariners to coat the Saxon ship with the remaining tar, and onto it he threw a flaming brand. The ship began to burn, the tar bubbling. When the ship was half devoured Avitas turned away. Deeming his messege delivered, Avitas set sail once more for Rome.

The fire spread to many nearby merchant ships and a warehouse, the townspeople began working to contain it. They tossed buckets of water to control the flames and soaked nearby buildings and ships with water. Once the fires began to die down the people returned to their business or worked to recover whatever could be salvaged. The damage to the waterfront was immense and would not be easily forgotten, the people there were calling for the blood of the Romans.
